Things THat Make You Go "Nyerg!!"

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 6, 2008, 2:13 AM
  • Mood: Sickened
  • Listening to: "Celtic Thunder" on YouTube
  • Reading: Nothing at this exact moment - I'm at work
  • Watching: the inside of my eyelids
  • Playing: Nothing
  • Eating: Easter chocolates
  • Drinking: Coke (a dietary staple)
Okay, so we all have things that gross us out to the point of wanting to throw up our toenail. For most people it's the sight of blood or internal organs (I know people who can't watch such movies as "Saw" without losing it). My father, for example, can't stand needles - which is funny, because this is the man who's nearly crucified himself six ways from Sunday hammering in nails, but try to take blood from him and he cries like a 6-year-old). For me, there are two main things...

First off, if you ever see a photo of me, you'll see that I wear glasses. There's a very good reason for that: I can't wear contacts. It's not that I'm not physiologically abe to, it's that the sheer notion of purposely poking myself in the eye makes my eyes want to crawl into the back of my skull. My wife laughs at me because I can't watch her put on mascara or eyeliner without cringing. I can't watch anything that has to do with physical manipulation of the eyes or eyelids. It grosses me out THAT much.

Second - and this is the main reason I posted this - is, arguably, the most benign and beneficial creatures on the earth, namely worms, snails and slugs.

Just the sight of them makes me want to puke. And God forbid they are moving. Just the sight - or heck, thought - of them makes my skin crawl.

So, naturally, what do I see when I go outside recently? Not just a worm, but a worm and a slug trying to escape the pouring rain. For some it's a sign of the season (which is good - the Divine know I am so VERY done with winter), but for me, I'm just trying to keep my lunch on the inside of my body a little bit longer...

Confidence comes with time, and skill with practice. I recommend starting with what you know, both in subject and material, then try mixing it up a bit: For example, you're good with creating landscape scenes from a distance. Try "zooming in" on something, working smaller. Instead of a beautiful ice-strewn landscape, try the banks of a river. Then start to incorporate things you normally don't, like vegetation or animals (both which aren't that easy, I'll tell you right now, but don't get discouraged if they don't turn out right. The more you practice, the better they will get).

I've been drawing pretty much religiously since I was 12 (I'm 28 now), with my main focus being people (as you can probably tell by looking through my gallery). About the same time, I found my niche in comic book artistry (cartooning). However, at the same time, while I was adequate enough for such a novice artist of such a young age, I had a hard time paying attention to proportions (all my people looked like they suffered from severe achondroplasia dwarfism :P). But as time went, as I paid attention to what I was drawing, on how different people used their linework, I started incorporating their methods. That's advice #2: learn from others. This may mean art courses, or simply scouting Deviant Art, looking at other's works, seeing how they do it, and learning from them. As your time goes on, start working on things that are more complex.

Advice #3: no matter how your work turns out, remember that it's GOOD. Confidence in your work takes time to build, and yes, talking to yourself and building your work up is good -- and yes, sane. As you progress, you'll see better stuff. But I'll tell you that no matter what, you'll never truly appreciate you're own work. You'll be your worse critic. This is also sane. It will take time for you to actually appreciate your work. Take that time, don't give up, and eventually, you'll see it for what your audience see (for me, I reasolised it last month :P).

I'm not sure if this helps or not, but I hope it did. Please ask any other questions you might have. Always glad to be of assistance!

External so far, I have been a bit too lazy to learn how to use 3DS Max and Blender is a bit too trickey.

Heh, careful, I might just take that offer.

Curious, aside from external scenes, what other types of scenes can you do?

Trust me, not a problem. I am very much enjoying your work, and that of Adam. In many ways, it's very inspirational, and giving me ideas of how to refine my own work.
